Memorial Day Weekend 2023

Hi and thanks for stopping by! I hope everyone enjoyed a great long weekend kicking off summer and remembering all those who have sacrificed their lives for our country.

When living in Ohio we would always head north for Memorial Day weekend, so this year we were already here! Ryan’s dad arrived Thursday evening and it was great to spend lots of time with him. The boys absolutely love grandpa’s company, and we appreciate his time and help so much!

The boys played with our neighbors’ granddaughters all weekend (Owen referred to one as his ‘girlfriend’, it was pretty adorable.) We also got to hang with soccer friends at a birthday party Saturday night. Sunday afternoon was spent with my sister and brother-in-law and our niece, Hazel. They were so excited to see their cousin and it melted my heart seeing them all together.

We really lucked out with the weather all weekend long: pure sunshine with temperatures in the 70s and even 80s on Monday. The gorgeous weather had us outside a lot playing in the sand, on boat rides, doing a little yard work, campfires, and more. The boys even went for a swim in Lake Michigan! I think kids must lack some nerve endings or something, because boy is that water cold!

Ryan’s sister’s in-laws graciously invited us over for the day on Sunday afternoon and the boys had a blast swimming, playing soccer, interacting with their cousin, and even a fast boat ride on Lake Michigan. The boys adore Hazel, and it has been so fun watching her grow her first year.

It was my first time on a boat in Lake Michigan and the water was just beautiful. Andrew loved every minute, Lucas was a little scared (he’s not used to fast speed boats) and Owen was cold, so we wrapped him in a towel ha-ha. Honestly, I was a little cold too! We were going pretty fast! We had a blast though and it was definitely a highlight this weekend.

Evenings were spent by the campfire, Friday and Sunday next door and Saturday at a birthday party. It’s encouraging seeing the boys begin to establish friendships up here and getting to know people in our community. I did not take any pictures at the birthday party except for their pretty cool treehouse that Lucas now wants to replicate.

On Monday, we enjoyed another slow morning. The afternoon was spent swimming and playing along with some chores. The stairs going down to our dock need redone, so Ryan and grandpa spent some time working on that project. I cleaned out our boat from being in storage all winter. We didn’t get it out on the water as the day got away from us, but hopefully this week!

Overall, it was a great weekend packed with sunshine, friends, and family. The boys stayed up way past their bedtime and made some wonderful memories to kick off summer. I think they have already transitioned into “summer mode” so these next few weeks of school may be a little tough. Their teachers have some fun things planned though and summer will officially be here before we know it!

Grandpa left this morning, and it was sad having to say goodbye. As for the week ahead, it’s the usual routine of school and soccer. The weather is still looking great so hopefully lots of time spent outside. I can’t believe we are starting the month of June; it seems I flip the calendar sooner and sooner each month.

Thank you for reading and making my blog a part of your day!
